John Sumser is a big data professional. He’s also an HR professional. His extensive background in various jobs and industries has made him an excellent fit for his company, HR Examiner. John is also a great fit to give some insight into to how DevOps should ideally function.
John is very good at helping people understand the way big data changes the world around us. Things like Google Glass will generate enough data to accomplish millions of goals. However, it takes time, money, and resources to analyze all of this data.
According to John, the law profession, ‘personal space’, and the idea of lying could be a thing of the past very soon. Possibly sooner than you think.

“In 2006, the vast majority said there will never be a driverless car, because nobody can handle the data required to make a left hand turn into oncoming traffic. And about 15 minutes later, Google’s prototype was running on the highway 101 between San Jose and San Francisco. That’s the world we inhabit, where the impossible becomes real in a tighter span than you could ever imagine.”
As Sumser explains, companies that are lacking in flexibility will simply fail from this point forward. A very critical aspect of DevOps is flexibility. Having the flexibility to understand, interpret, and adapt to different surroundings, projects, and personnel is a necessity.
“I think ‘big data’ is a term that’s just like ‘cheese’, it tells you something, but it doesn’t tell you everything….If you say we’re going over to the cheese factory, well there happen to be a number of them and one is a brie factory, a blue cheese factory, and one is a goat cheese factory. They’re very different even though they’re all ‘cheese’.”
This analogy, as unavoidably entertaining as it is, can be used to explain a huge variety of buzzwords, including DevOps.
